Religious Education at St. Thomas More Catholic Primary

The Bishop’s Vision is to make Christ known and loved, through the provision of excellent Catholic education and schools intent on finding Christ in their daily lives and sharing that encounter with others.

We strive to live by our mission statement in everything we do . . .

‘Live as God calls us’

Statement of Intent

Our intention at St Thomas More is to provide a safe, secure, loving, and supportive environment where all individuals are valued and cared for and have an important role to play in making our school the very best it can be.

  • We aim to enrich and develop the children’s understanding of the Catholic faith so they can live it.
  • Provide an environment that fosters close partnership with parents/guardians, the parish and wider community.
  • Meet the spiritual, physical, social, moral, cultural, and academic needs of all pupils to enable them to fulfil their potential.
  • Lead by example as St. Thomas More did, and develop respect, kindness, tolerance, responsibility and care for others and ourselves.
  • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of every child, so they develop the skills to become independent lifelong learners.
  • Provide a curriculum that encompasses the distinctive nature of Catholic Education and meets National Curriculum requirements.
  • Ensure all involved within the life of our school share and understand our mission statement so that it can be promoted and lived out daily.

Come and See

Here at St Thomas More we follow the national Roman Catholic Primary Religious Education Programme ‘Come & See.’  This programme is delivered throughout school from Nursery through to Year 6.

The programme explores the religious dimensions of questions about life, dignity and purpose within the Catholic tradition. Links are made with the children’s own experience and with the universal ‘human experience.’ It raises questions and provides material for reflection by the children on their own experiences and enables them to explore the beliefs, values and way of life of the Catholic tradition and where appropriate other faith traditions.

Religious Education is a core subject of our curriculum, teaching and learning in RE makes up 10% of curriculum time. It is taught rigorously with the same expectations as other core subjects whilst maintaining a creative element and encouraging children to question and reflect.

The process for delivering the topics in ‘Come and See’ has three stages – Explore, Reveal and Respond:
